Young Americans dream big. A vision of a better life is a human sentiment shared by everyone, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. For most young people, the dream of a college education, a fulfilling career, and a safe home to raise a family is reasonably within their reach. By eighth grade these students are enrolled in effective school districts with high graduation rates, private academies, and possibly charter schools. They know what opportunities await them in colleges and universities and have supportive and knowledgeable parents and counselors ready to help them navigate any obstacles in their paths. A plan is constructed for them.
The paths of these eighth graders rarely cross with those of inner city youth who may enter a high school where graduation rates are below fifty percent. In an environment that may be void of parental guidance, where a young student is more likely to see the sterile inside of a prison cell than a college lecture hall, a bright 8th grade student may have no plan or support to go to college and have a successful life. These students should not be left behind. Where is their plan to attain their goals? For students who can envision a better life and are motivated, willing and able to develop their knowledge and expand their skills, we can provide the roadmap. |
